As Earth Day draws near, WECAN, West Virginia University’s sustainability program, is promoting a calendar of earth-focused events and activities from multiple colleges and departments on campus during the month of April.

“Why limit Earth Day to one day when there are so many wonderful events planned throughout the entire month?” asked Stephanie Toothman, operation coordinator for Facilities Management Recycling Services.

WECAN encourages students and employees to get involved in one or more activities planned to celebrate Earth Day, which began in 1970.

“This is a time to reflect on the environmental accomplishments from the past academic year, while pushing forward to enhance sustainability on campus,” Toothman said.

Events kick off with a Rail Trail Clean-up with Friends of Decker’s Creek coordinated by WVU’s Center for Service & Learning. The clean-up will be held on April 7, from 3-6 p.m.

Throughout the rest of the month, events at various locations on campus will include the OneShirt challenge, wildflower walks at the Arboretum, and a chance to “Get Caught Green Handed.” If a WECAN Eco-Rep, student sustainability ambassador, catches you performing a sustainable act such as recycling, refilling your reusable bottle, or using alternative transportation, you could receive a special prize.
