West Virginia University Student Organizations Services is seeking nominations for the Kenneth D. Gray Student Leadership Award for 2014-15.

Named in honor of the current WVU Vice President for Student Affairs, this award is designed to recognize exemplary leadership on behalf of the students at WVU. This award is one of WVU’s most prestigious student honors and spotlights those who demonstrate exemplary critical-thinking, creativity and positive leadership. Undergraduate and graduate students are eligible for the award.

Criteria for selection of this award is as follows: demonstrates initiative in problem-solving and consensus building, provides a high level of commitment to the Division of Student Affairs and student programs, fosters collaborative and creative thinking, demonstrates a positive influence in motivating other students to accomplish goals, encourages students to be a visionary and exhibits positive leadership and demonstrates initiative in meeting challenges. Additionally, the student should inspire other students, through example, to act with integrity and have high professional standards, pursue and achieve high academic standards and strive for excellence in communication among their peers and others.

Letters of nomination should address the above criteria and include a list of student’s leadership roles, accomplishments and activities. The committee will also accept a resume. Appropriate nomination materials must be submitted to Robert Campione, interim director of Student Organizations Services, by March 19.

A native of Excelsior, Gray received his law degree from WVU College of Law in 1969 and entered active duty in the U.S. Army Judge Advocate General’s Corps. He joined WVU as vice president of Student Affairs in 1996 after serving for three years as the first African-American general in the Judge Advocate Generals Corps. In 1994, Gray was inducted in the WVU Alumni Association Academy of Distinguished Alumni.

The Committee on Student Organizations will select the winner. The award will be presented on April 5 at the Inauguration Ceremony of Student Administration.
