The West Virginia University Friends of International Students & Scholars Program will hold its first meeting between international students and potential friends (hosts) from 5-7 p.m. on March 5 in E. Moore Hall.

FISS matches WVU international students and scholars with local individuals, couples or families. The new “friendship” provides a mutually beneficial relationship, allowing all parties of the program to gain something from the experience.

“This is an opportunity for our international students to learn more about the American way of life, traditions and customs,” said Cecilia Orrego from the Office of International Students and Scholars. “Our friends/hosts, in turn, learn about their international students/scholars’ country, culture and language.”

Hosts are not expected to provide housing, but can provide temporary accommodations during school breaks. It is recommended, however, that the local community member and student maintain contact at least once monthly, in order to make the most out of the relationship, and form a friendship that will last past that initial year.

“International students want to see every day American life. As a result, they enjoy cooking with their friend, sightseeing in the area, shopping, attending sports and cultural events, or just spending time watching TV at the ‘friends’ home,” Orrego said.

Anyone in the community who is interested in befriending an International student or scholar is welcome to participate, regardless of age or family structure.
