The West Virginia University Chapter of the Society for Conservation Biology will hold its second art action March 6.

This year the auction, held at 6 p.m. in the Percival Hall Lobby, will support the Avian Conservation Center of Appalachia and its efforts in raptor and bird rehabilitation.

The auction will feature nature-inspired art from local professional and amateur artists, as well as music, food and various activities. Most notably, Luna the Barn Owl, an educational bird from the ACCA, will be there to promote conservation issues and educational programs.

The art will be auctioned off via a ticket drawing. Each attendee who purchased a ticket prior to the event will be guaranteed a piece, though a limited supply may be available for purchase at the door. To request a ticket, contact wvuchapterscb@gmail.com.

Formed in fall 2012 by students dedicated to nature and an environmental passion, WVU’s SCB chapter has been an active group. Through its work on campus, it supports the goals promoted by the national organization: conservation of biological diversity, research and the involvement of science in management and policy.

WVU’s students do these tasks on a local level by raising awareness of biological issues in the local community.

One of the projects used to accomplish this is the Amphibian Monitoring Project. Aimed at middle school students, this project promotes citizen science in school-aged children, and encourages them to participate in the scientific community. Proceeds from last year’s art auction have helped supply funds and tools for this project.
