For this Valentine’s Day weekend, the West Virginia University School of Theatre & Dance presents—not a sad love story—but “A Kind of Sad Love Story.”

The play, by Jeffrey Lo, is directed by senior Bachelor of Fine Arts acting student Cody Wilson and will take place Feb. 14-15 at 7:30 p.m. and Feb. 16 at 2 p.m. in the Vivian Davis Michael Laboratory Theatre located in the Creative Arts Center.

“A Kind of Sad Love Story” takes a look at the long-term relationship between 20-somethings Andrew and Emily, as they work through the breakdown of their relationship by revisiting milestones, both funny and bittersweet, along with a cast of oddball supporting characters, and come to terms with trying to move on with their lives.

“Working with a number of people who I’ve never worked with before has been an amazing experience for me as a student director,” said director Cody Wilson. “Each actor works differently, and learning to adapt to that uniqueness has really sharpened my skills as a director.”

Bay Area-based director and playwright Jeffrey Lo is an alumnus of the University of California, Irvine, and is the founding artistic director for The 06 Ensemble.

“I am so pleased to bring Jeffrey to share his expertise with the students at WVU,” said WVU Resident Artist Jim Knipple, director of the LAB Theatre program. “His blend of charm and talent is so refreshing to be around, and his plays display the fresh voice that a lot of theaters across the country are taking notice of. We’re very lucky that he has taken the time to, not only see the performances, but give talkbacks to our students as well.”

The East Coast Premiere of “A Kind of Sad Love Story” features WVU students Isaac Snyder, Lauren Waldron, Nick Ryan, Megan Schreiber, Kevin Langue, and Kathleen Cowan.

Also, there will be a workshop reading of Lo’s new play, “Dealing Dreams,” on Saturday, Feb. 15, at 2 p.m. in the Vivian Davis Michael Laboratory Theatre.

Admission is free for “A Kind of Sad Love Story,” but seating is limited. Attendance forms for classes will be available during intermission.
