West Virginia University School of Art and Design faculty member Victoria J. Fergus was honored at the West Virginia Art Education Association State Conference held at West Liberty University this fall for her many years of service to the organization.

Fergus received the Distinguished Service within the Profession Award at the organization’s annual banquet held at Oglebay Resort.

She was also given a lifetime of free conference registrations for her 22 years of service as treasurer of the association and her 30 years of service on the Executive Board as president, director of the Higher Education Division, and advisor to the National and State Student Chapters.

Fergus has been on the Executive Board of the Art Education Association longer than any other member in the history of the organization.

She has previously been named West Virginia Outstanding Educator of the Year three times by the Association and also recognized by the National Art Education Association at its Eastern Region Awards Session as the Regional Higher Education Division Educator of the Year. Fergus has also received the National Art Education Association’s National Service Award, the National Student Chapter Advisor Award and was its Higher Education Division Director from 1999-2001 and then the National Advisor for Student Officers and Student Chapters from 2001-2006.

Fergus is coordinator of the Art Education program in the WVU School of Art and Design. She is also a practicing and exhibiting artist who is known nationally for her work in fibers. She holds a doctorate from Purdue University and joined the WVU faculty in 1983.

The purpose of the West Virginia Art Education Association is to advance West Virginia art education and promote the arts as essential elements in education programs.
