West Virginia University P.I. Reed School of Journalism Dean Maryanne Reed gave a planned gift to create the “William and Jean Reed Scholarship” in honor of her parents in 2010.

Now, her brother Stanley J. Reed, a Washington, D.C. area attorney, has pledged $25,000 to jump-start the scholarship so it can be awarded within the next two years.

When William (“Bud”) and Jean Reed first met at Ohio State in fall of 1945, it was love at first sight – at least for him. A charmer and salesman, Bud eventually won Jean over, and they were “pinned” her freshman year. Four years later, they were married and started a life together – a love match that lasted 44 years until Jean’s death in 1993.

First-generation college students, both Bud and Jean Reed directly benefited from their education at a land-grant university, including meeting their life’s partner. In tribute, their children created an academic scholarship at WVU in their memory.

Stanley Reed said he is thrilled to share in his sister’s vision of helping WVU students build a strong foundation for their future.

“Helping the next generation achieve success is a lasting way of honoring our parents’ memory,” Stanley said. “Our parents instilled in us an appreciation for hard work and the transforming power of education. They went through some hard times and sacrificed a lot to help put us through college and graduate school.”

Stanley Reed is an attorney who heads Lerch, Early & Brewer’s Litigation group in Bethesda, Md. His diverse law practice includes complex civil and employment litigation, white collar criminal defense work, and the representation of lawyers and health care providers in professional responsibility matters.

Chambers USA has named Reed a “Leader in His Field” in General Commercial Litigation every year since 2007. Best Lawyers named him Washington, D.C.’s Ethics and Professional Responsibility Law “Lawyer of the Year” in 2013, and he has been named one of “Washington’s Top Trial Lawyers” by Washingtonian magazine.

The gift was made in conjunction with A State of Minds: The Campaign for West Virginia University. The $750 million dollar comprehensive campaign being conducted by the WVU Foundation on behalf of the University runs through December 2015.
