West Virginia University Extension Service is recruiting summer employees for the state’s largest youth development organization: 4-H.
Extension Camp Instructors – otherwise known as ECIs – work residential and day camps across the state and assist with other educational programs during the summer months.

The salary is $425 per weeklong assignment, with room and board provided during the assignment.

Applications are available at www.4-hyd.ext.wvu.edu/camping/campinstructor, or by contacting your local office of the WVU Extension Service. Applications must be postmarked by Friday, Jan. 17 to receive priority review; however, applications will be accepted until all positions are filled.

“ECIs are more than just summer employees,” said Matthew Schmuck, WVU Extension Service camping specialist. “They act as role models, activity leaders and friends to the 21,000 youths who participate in WVU Extension 4-H camping programs each summer.”

Typical ECI duties include working with volunteers, parents and 4-H’ers to lead classes, singing, programs and activities at camps.

4-H camping is a time-honored tradition in West Virginia, which was home to the nation’s first State 4-H Camp at WVU Jackson’s Mill near Weston.

ECIs must be at least 18 years old; have a high school diploma or GED; have at least one year of college, trade school or military service. Experience working with youths in either a volunteer or paid position is required. The employees must have transportation to training and work assignments and be able to pass a criminal background check.

For more than a century, 4-H has focused on agricultural science, electricity, mechanics, entrepreneurship and natural sciences. Today, 4-H out-of-school opportunities also exist in subjects like rocketry, robotics, biofuels, renewable energy and computer science.
