This semester’s World Music Showcase Concert in the West Virginia University School of Music will feature a special appearance by WVU’s own “Big Red Drum,” during a performance by the Taiko (Japanese Drum) Ensemble.

The concert begins at 7:30 p.m., Friday, Nov. 8, in the Lyell B. Clay Theatre of the Creative Arts Center.

Directed by Michael Vercelli, the concert is a production of the WVU World Music Performance Center.

In addition to the WVU Taiko Ensemble, the concert will feature the WVU African Music and Dance Ensemble and the WVU Steel Band.

“This concert focuses on contemporary arrangements for traditional ensembles including music from Trinidad, Ghana, Guinea and Japan,” Vercelli said.

“Highlighting the concert will be Steel Band arrangements directed by graduate students Jamie Sunshine and Mitch Greco, as well as a premiere of Ewe recreational music led by multidisciplinary studies major Logan Seidler.”

Vercelli, holds a doctorate of musical arts in ethnomusicology from the University of Arizona. He has studied the traditional music of other countries and done fieldwork in Bali, Cuba, Brazil and primarily in Ghana.
