Police are seeking information about three armed robberies that occurred near the West Virginia University campus recently.

Early Sunday (Oct. 20) morning, three suspects struck one victim with a handgun and took his wallet and cell phone on Beverly Avenue. The suspects, described as black males wearing dark-colored hooded shirts and masks, fled the area on foot.

Later Sunday evening at 9:30, a man dressed in dark clothing with his face covered entered the Express Mart at 502 Stewart Street, produced a handgun and told a clerk to give him all the money in the store’s register. The suspect fled the store on foot.

On Monday (Oct. 21) at 11:30 p.m., a suspect entered the Dairy Mart at 1287 Richwood Ave. and demanded all of the money in the register. The man, a white male carrying a tire iron, was approximately 6-foot tall, had a medium build and was wearing a hooded sweatshirt and mask covering his face. The suspect fled the area on foot prior to officers arriving on the scene.

  • Use well-lit streets and sidewalks
  • If walking at night, travel with friends
  • Keep the University Police emergency number in your cell phones 304-293-3136.
  • Emergency phones are located in 36 locations around Downtown and Evansdale Campuses. Use the phone to activate 911 Dispatch in cases of emergency.
  • Tell others where you are going and when you should be back. Don’t post the information on your residence hall door.
  • Use available buses, taxis, or use a ride program instead of walking.
  • Don’t get distracted by cell phone calls, texting or listening to music.
  • Have keys ready before you get to your car or home.
  • If someone approaches you and demands your money and/or valuables give it to them. Try to memorize their facial and body figures. Note any accent in their voice while they talk and details about clothing of the suspect. All area police departments have officers working 24 hours a day ready to respond.
