The Rack, West Virginia University’s food bank, will host a campus-wide food drive in conjunction with the second Governor’s Day to Serve. The food drive will begin on today (Sept. 23) and continue through Saturday (Sept. 28).

“The Rack’s theme for the event is ‘Each One, Reach One,’ and our objective is to address hunger insecurities on WVU’s campus and the local community,” said Jacqueline Dooley, Student Organizations Services program director.

Dooley suggests that the WVU community should the following items: evaporated milk, instant breakfast drinks, canned meats, beans and nuts, microwaveable ready-to-eat meals, grains such as bread and muffin mix, cereal, rice and breakfast foods, condiments, healthy snack items, dried or canned fruit and non-food items such as personal hygiene and household goods.

Items can be dropped off at the Mountainlair on Friday (Sept. 27) from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. or the Gaskins House, on 709 N. High Street, from 3 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. throughout the week. Arrangements can be made to pick up donations from various colleges if they are unable to deliver the goods to the Mountainlair or Gaskins House.

Monetary donations will be accepted all week, and checks should be made out to WVU Foundation, Re: WVU Food Pantry for Students.

“Keeping with this year’s theme, the Rack volunteers will distribute items to the local food pantries in Monongalia County,” Dooley said. “WVU students utilize these community facilities when the Rack cannot supply their needs.”

This is West Virginia Governor Earl Ray Tomblin’s effort to strengthen communities through volunteer service, and he is asking everyone in the state to get involved. Last year, volunteers planned and participated in more than 400 service projects throughout West Virginia’s 55 counties.
