The Art Museum of West Virginia University and The Friends of the Museum announce the first “Art Up Close!” event of the fall semester, focusing on individual works of art from the museum collection. The event will be held Tuesday, Sept. 10, and will follow the groundbreaking for the new Art Museum.

Titled “William Kentridge: Through the Lenses of Art Historians,” the lecture will be presented by Cindy Persinger, associate professor of art at California University of Pennsylvania where she teaches art history in the Department of Art & Design. Dr. Persinger was visiting assistant professor of art history at WVU from 2008 to 2010 prior to taking her current position. She continues to teach art theory at WVU each summer.

Persinger will examine Kentridge’s work, which she uses in assignments in her art theory class, and discuss how viewers may consider one work of art from a variety of viewpoints.

Persinger teaches courses on modern art, women and art, art theory, and contemporary art and theory. She has published in the Journal of Art Historiography and is currently working on a book entitled “Meyer Schapiro: An American Art Historian.”

She received her Master of Arts degree and doctorate in Art History from the University of Pittsburgh where she focused on Art Historiography, American Art and European Modernism. She also received a Master of Arts in French translation and a Bachelor of Arts degree in French from Kent State University.

The “Art Up Close!” presentations are held from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. in the Museum Education Center (formerly the Erickson Alumni Center) adjacent to the WVU Creative Arts Center. All the events are free and open to the public.

Each “Art Up Close!” presentation features an original work of art and commentary by WVU faculty, followed by a question and answer session and light refreshments.

This series of lectures is designed to give an in-depth look at a single work of art selected from the WVU Art Collection. Audience members have the opportunity to view the actual works of art.
