Dr. Ivan Pinnell, an associate professor at West Virginia University’s P.I. Reed School of Journalism, has announced his retirement, effective Aug. 15.

Dr. Pinnell has been a central figure in the school’s public relations program for nearly 25 years. He chaired the program from 1989-2010. He also served as associate dean (1991-2007) and director of graduate studies (2001-2007).

Beloved by colleagues and students alike, Pinnell recently received the School’s 2013 Golden Quill Teaching Award – an award based solely on student nominations.

“Dr. Pinnell has served WVU and the School of Journalism for more than two decades,” said School of Journalism Dean Maryanne Reed. “Over the years, he has touched the lives of so many students, and graduates love to share fond memories of ‘Doc P.’ His dedication and commitment to serving the students as both a professor and mentor make him one of the School’s most highly regarded faculty. He will be greatly missed by his family at WVU and the School of Journalism.”

In addition to more than 25 years of extensive teaching experience at the college level in traditional and non-traditional institutions – including full-time at WVU, the U.S. Air Force Academy and the Defense Information School – Pinnell is a retired U.S. Army lieutenant colonel (1968-1989).

Pinnell earned his Ph.D. in human communication from the University of Denver in 1984. He earned his master’s degree in political science from Jacksonville State University in 1973 and his bachelor’s degree in journalism at WVU in 1965. He also earned an associate degree from Potomac State in 1963.

The School will host an Open House Reception to celebrate Dr. Pinnell’s retirement on Friday, May 3 from 12-2 p.m. in 101 Martin Hall. WVU colleagues, alumni and friends are encouraged to stop by.
