The West Virginia University Women in Science and Engineering (WiSE) Giving Circle is set to give its second set of awards since the circle’s inception in 2010.
The giving circle will grant four awards totaling $10,000 to female science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) faculty and students within the Eberly College of Arts and Sciences and the Benjamin M. Statler College of Engineering and Mineral Resources.
The 2013-14 funding comes from a variety of sources: WiSE annual membership and donations, the Hall – de Graaf Endowment for Women in Science & Engineering, the Research Trust Fund, Hall – de Graaf Science & Engineering Fund and the Eberly College of Arts and Sciences.
Eligible students are undergraduate and graduate female students majoring in STEM disciplines within the Eberly College of Arts and Sciences or the Benjamin M. Statler College of Engineering and Mineral Resources. Eligible faculty members are non-tenured faculty members of either the Eberly College of Arts and Sciences or the College of Engineering and Mineral Resources.
Applicants must be active participants in STEM research conducted at WVU. The researcher who works with the student applicant must endorse all submissions. Eberly STEM disciplines include: biology, chemistry, geology & geography, mathematics, physics, political science, psychology, sociology & anthropology, and statistics.
Statler STEM disciplines include: chemical engineering, civil & environmental engineering, computer & electrical engineering, industrial & management systems engineering, mechanical & aerospace engineering, mining engineering and petroleum & natural gas engineering.
Two awards will be given in the amount of $1,250 each to support student research. In addition, two awards will be given for $3,750 each to support faculty research. The submission deadline is April 12, and the award recipients will be announced on May 6. By accepting awards, the recipients agree to provide a summary report by April 1, 2014, to the WiSE Giving Circle describing the awards’ impact and results.
The WiSE Giving Circle brings together alumni and friends who seek to impact the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics by encouraging and mentoring young women in their pursuit of professional careers in these disciplines. It proves WVU’s commitment to recruiting, promoting and advancing women.
The giving circle is a program developed simultaneously with WVU’s National Science Foundation ADVANCE project, which seeks to “increase the participation and advancement of women in academic science and engineering careers.”
