Violinist Roy Sonne and pianist YeeHa Chiu, both of Pittsburgh, will present a guest artist recital at the West Virginia University Creative Arts Center, Monday, Feb. 11.

The concert begins at 7:30 p.m. in the Bloch Learning and Performance Hall (Room 200A) and is free and open to the public.

In addition, both Sonne and Chiu will present master classes at the Creative Arts Center from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. on the same day.

Sonne’s violin master class will be in Room 424A and Chiu’s piano master class will be in Room 320. Both master classes are free and open to the public.

The program for the recital at 7:30 p.m. includes: “Sonatina Op. 100” by Antonin Dvoř�k; “Sonata #5 in F Major, Op. 24” (Spring Sonata) by Ludwig van Beethoven; and two works by Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky, including “Melodie Op. 42” and “Valse Scherzo.”

Roy Sonne is a violinist, conductor and educator who studied at the New England Conservatory of Music and the Mannes College of Music. He was a member of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra for 28 years and music director of the Edgewood Symphony Orchestra for 12 years. He currently teaches at Carnegie Mellon University and maintains a private teaching studio in Mt. Lebanon, Pa. He continues to participate in concerts in the Pittsburgh area, as well as presenting workshops and master classes. Sonne started playing jazz violin at age 60 and was a founding member of “Blues on First,” Pittsburgh’s only jazz string quartet. In addition to the violin, he also studied piano and conducting. He was previously concertmaster of the National Symphony Orchestra of Bolivia.

Hong Kong-born pianist YeeHa Chiu is a Steinway Artist and a graduate of the Royal College of Music and the Juilliard School. She has performed in solo and chamber music recitals in Asia, Europe, Australia and the United States, and as a concerto soloist with orchestras including the London Philharmonic Orchestra and the Vienna Symphony. Based in Pittsburgh, Chiu is in demand as a teacher and coach, and frequently collaborates with musicians from the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra.
