Show your love to Upward Bound by celebrating Valentine’s Day at Ruby Tuesday from Feb. 15-17.

A total of 20 percent of your bill will be donated to the West Virginia University Upward Bound. The proceeds will be used to help high school students get a kick-start to their collegiate career by taking a university course for credit.

Upward Bound is a federally funded program designed to help high school students overcome social, cultural and academic barriers to higher education. Upward Bound serves up to 60 students from Clay-Battelle, Grafton and Preston High Schools. All students will be the first in their families to earn a four-year degree, meet income-eligibility requirements (150% of the federal poverty line) and/or are academically at-risk. Two-thirds of all Upward Bound students are first-generation college and low-income.

“High school students aren’t eligible to receive financial aid, so taking college courses before graduation is a privilege that is usually reserved for students whose families can afford the costs,” said Upward Bound Director Fran Bennett. “With your help, high-achieving UB students will be afforded the same opportunity as their peers.

“Taking courses while in high school will help prepare students for the academic rigor necessary to complete a degree, graduate in a timelier manner by starting with credits under their belts, and reduce their college debt load by decreasing the amount of time they are enrolled in school,” Bennett said.
