West Virginia University President Jim Clements issued the following statement on Friday’s announcement by Sen. Jay Rockefeller that he would not seek re-election:

“WVU has a strong relationship with Senator Rockefeller, one that affirms every aspect of our mission, from teaching and research to outreach and service.

“We appreciate all that he has done and continues to do to advance West Virginia and the nation. Senator Rockefeller’s vast legacy of service to West Virginia includes vital aid to our schools and libraries through the e-Rate program, essential support for our universities and colleges through the Experimental Program to Stimulate Competitive Research, an unwavering commitment to helping our veterans and senior citizens as well as support for mine safety and development of transportation infrastructure to serve all parts of the state.

“On a personal level, Senator Rockefeller’s kindness, compassion, incredible work ethic and generous spirit have defined his extraordinary life and career in public service, and we are so very thankful for all he has done for our University and the entire State.”
