Pioneer contemporary dance masters Pilobolus will perform at the West Virginia University Creative Arts Center Tuesday, Jan. 15.

Pilobolus is a modern performance company that revels in its revolutionary approach to creativity in dance. Pilobolus Dance Theatre curates and convenes groups of diverse artists—including the MIT Distributed Robotics Laboratory, Art Spiegelman, OK Go, Radiolab, and many others—to make inventive, athletic, witty, collaborative performance works on stage and screen using the human body as a medium for expression.
The smooth, organic choreography of Pilobolus often blurs the lines between individual performers, creating a sense of dance-troupe-as-organism. Still evolving after 35 years, Pilobolus has built a repertoire of more than 85 works and received numerous awards, including the Samuel H. Scripps American Dance Festival Award for lifetime achievement in choreography. Their hilarious appearance at the 2007 Oscars—where they built witty silhouettes to punctuate the ceremony—brought the troupe further into the public eye.
Pilobolus began as an experiment among three guys and one puzzled professor in a Dartmouth dance class back in 1970. It was survival of the giddiest, as the three non-dancers goofed around with the material they’d been given—themselves—and got entangled in science-inspired poses and movements. From these humble, biological beginnings has emerged an innovative, unlikely and almost without category dance company that combines athleticism, grace and humor with a profound sense of unity.
The Dallas Morning News raves that Pilobolus packs “a plethora of sophisticated tricks, including dramatic sound effects, super-slow-motion movement and shadow puppetry, and the bravura skills of the troupe’s seven dancers, minimally costumed to show off their taut muscularity, into arty spectacle meant to wow and entertain.”
