The Morgantown Community Orchestra, conducted by Alejandro Pinzn and made up of students in West Virginia University’s Community Music Program and Morgantown-area musicians, will present a Christmas concert titled ”’Eers Christmas!” at the Creative Arts Center, Sunday, Dec. 9.

The concert begins at 6 p.m. in the Gladys G. Davis Theatre. It is free and open to the public, although donations will be accepted at the door.

The orchestra is for intermediate and advanced level players of all ages in the community and region who wish to share and develop their talents while enjoying music-making in a friendly orchestral setting.

According to Pinzn, the concert will feature special guests Jennifer Berkebile, a mezzo soprano, and the High Street Jazz Band.

“The concert will be Christmas music only, including a section of sing-along carols in which the audience can participate,” he said. “Families are encouraged to bring their children to the concert.”

The Morgantown Community Orchestra has existed as part of the Community Music Program in the WVU School of Music since the late 1970s, under various names. Just recently, the name was changed from the Community Arts Orchestra to the Morgantown Community Orchestra and the orchestra now has about 45 members.

Alejandro Pinzn is a young and versatile Mexican musician. He is also conductor of the String Studio and Chamber Orchestra at Waynesburg University in Waynesburg, Pa., and is former conductor of the Latin American Choir of Pittsburgh, with whom he presented several concerts and programs to share the music and cultures of Latin America in the western Pennsylvania region. He is currently completing his doctorate in conducting in the WVU School of Music and is assistant conductor of the WVU Symphony Orchestra. His activities as a conductor include frequent performances both in Mxico and in the United States. Last summer, he made his debut in South America as guest conductor for “Camerata Cattaruzzi” at a concert at Buenos Aires University, in Buenos Aires, Argentina. The concert was part of the “Cycle of Great Concerts” of the educational institution.
