West Virginia University President Jim Clements assumes the chairmanship Friday (Oct. 12) of the American Council on Education’s Commission on Leadership, an advisory body to the Council that allows member presidents to share their leadership experience.

Clements, who is in the second year of a three-year term on the Commission, will also serve on the executive committee during his one year as chair.

“ACE is grateful to the presidents and senior leaders who have agreed to serve on these advisory commissions,” said Gretchen M. Bataille, ACE senior vice president for Leadership and Lifelong Learning. “We know they will bring great insight into how ACE can best tackle the challenges facing American higher education today.”

In addition to chairing the Commission meeting, Clements is participating as a panelist in the ACE “Advancing the Presidency” symposium in Washington, D.C. today (Oct. 11). He will participate on the panel, “Managing the Transition and That All-Important First Year,” and join fellow presidents Mark Becker, Georgia State University; Al Bowman, Illinois State University; Tori Haring-Smith, Washington & Jefferson; Wallace Loh, University of Maryland; Linda Edmonds Turner, Roxbury Community College; and Leslie Wong, San Francisco State University.

“It is an honor to be a part of this national organization that does so much for higher education, and a privilege to represent WVU and the great work our faculty and staff do here,” Clements said.

ACE includes more than 1,800 U.S. accredited, degree-granting institutions, including two- and four-year colleges, private and public universities, and nonprofit and for-profit entities.
