College football Saturdays in Morgantown are now – officially – one of the best places to tailgate in the nation.

West Virginia University was featured in this month’s issue of Tailgater Monthly as one of the top 21 college tailgates for 2012. WVU was selected as the 11th-best tailgate atmosphere in the nation.

The magazine says: “Morgantown needs to be on your list. No, really. These fans are serious about their tailgating. And the football is good.”

Chris Northrup, Mountaineer Maniacs director, called the atmosphere around the stadium “energetic,” and alumnus Charlie Piccirillo said with no professional team in West Virginia, “this is our state’s team.”

The Mountaineers were ranked as having the best tailgate experience in the Big 12 Conference in front of new peers TCU, Oklahoma and Texas.

Tailgater Monthly rated USC to have the best tailgate in the nation. The magazine has ranked college tailgates each September since 2009.
