Dr. Sue Day-Perroots, West Virginia University’s dean of Extended Learning, was recently honored with the Irving Award, the highest recognition given by the American Distance Education Consortium.

The award is named for Dr. Irvin Omtvedt, vice-chancellor emeritus of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and vice-president emeritus of the University of Nebraska System, and recognizes members for leadership in quality distance education. The consortium was founded to foster innovative use of technology in the areas of teaching, research, extension and international programs and sharing of programs across state boundaries and interoperable administrative and infrastructure systems.

Day-Perroots was honored for her significant contribution to the field at the national and global level as well as her work at WVU. She became director of Extended Learning in 1993 and was named dean in 2001. Under her leadership, WVU has expanded online and off-campus programming to more than 25 graduate degrees and certificates, three undergraduate degree completion programs. In 2004, Extended Learning expanded into non-credit online programming as well. More than 5,000 students each term are enrolled in extended learning courses.

In addition to consortium, where she is now chair-elect, Day-Perroots is very active in many distance-learning organizations and often speaks at national conferences about quality in online learning and policies impacting distance education as well as the success of WVU’s program. She is also a peer reviewer with the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools.
