West Virginia University Extension Service is helping would-be gardeners with everything from selecting plants to pruning in its new online resource guide: Gardening 101.

The series, which was developed by WVU Extension specialists and agriculture agents from across the state, guides growers who have little or no background in the horticulture world.

“Gardening is as much an art as it is a science,” said John Jett, WVU Extension Service horticulture specialist. “We want our users to feel confident and comfortable when going to their local greenhouse or big box store to start planning their gardens. Even if you’re just planting a few items, it can be overwhelming to a first time gardener.”

The site includes tips for growing flowers, plants, fruits and vegetables. There’s also information for landscaping.

The series showcases everything from selecting plants to warding off destructive animals.

Jett reminds viewers that they can always contact their local county office of the WVU Extension Service for help with their lawn and garden needs.

For more avid gardeners, the WVU Extension Service Garden Calendar offers 365 days of tips and planning.
