In recognizing two West Virginia University blogs as “must reads,” a website has discovered what members of the WVU community have known for some time.

Included in EdTech, Focus on Higher Education’s, The Dean’s List: 50 Must-Read Higher Education Technology Blogs are Mobile in Higher Ed, the blog of a WVU staff member, and the WVU OIT Blog.

“I’m thrilled about this recognition,” said Chet Cook, OIT marketing and communications manager, who created the blog in 2008. “We weren’t notified beforehand, we didn’t submit anything so it’s quite an honor.”

The OIT blog focuses primarily on tips that help faculty, staff and students keep up to speed with the latest technology and useful tools; avoid phishing and other email and internet scams; and adopt maintenance practices that can protect and extend the life of their computer.

“The information technology team at West Virginia University puts out a great deal of useful and timely information, on everything from how to clean your mobile devices to protecting against the latest security threats,” the site said of the OIT blog.

Cook said since late 2011, the blog has been primarily maintained by Jessica Latham, a senior history major and McNair Scholar from Atlantic City, N.J. Other members of the OIT staff also contribute.

Also recognized was Mobile in Higher Ed , a blog created by Dave Olsen, a professional technologist with WVU’s University Relations – Web unit, in 2010.

Olsen said the blog’s initial goal was, “to share lessons learned about our mobile projects with the broader higher education community.”

With rapid evolution in mobile technology, Olsen expanded the initiative to share his views on the future of mobile and also relaying details and statistics and other behind-the-scenes information on some of WVU’s mobile and non-mobile projects.

“In the last two years the audience for the blog has definitely grown beyond higher ed and I think now we’re showing how individuals in higher ed can be thought leaders in general on the very important issue of mobile technology,” he said.

Olsen said the blog includes contributions from people all over campus.

“While the blog definitely discusses my own work, it also highlights the work of lots of people here in University Relations – Web and the University overall. A lot of the articles on the blog are either a distillation of conversations with others or feature the work of the great team here.

“Along with the WVU OIT blog getting featured, I think the list highlights the overall talent we have at this University. I’m proud that West Virginia University is being recognized for our work in multiple departments. Knowing that the content is so valued I’m encouraged to keep sharing what we’re doing here.”
