West Virginia University students who had been busy campaigning for Student Government Association positions over the last two weeks gathered in the Mountainlair to hear the results of the 2012 election on Thursday night.

In the end, Zach Redding, a junior political science major from Hanover, Pa., was elected SGA president. He will become the student representative on the WVU Board of Governors. Jarred Zuccari, a junior multidisciplinary studies major from Fairfax, Va., was named the new vice president of SGA. Both led the United Party.

“We worked so hard over the past few months. I can’t even put this into words what this means to me,” Redding said. “Now, it’s our opportunity to work and do exactly what we set out to do and make sure actions speak louder than words.”

“I’m going to take what I hear from the students and what I’ve learned over the past few years and use that to make the best informed decisions for the students.”

Redding and Zuccari said their first initiatives will be bullying on campus and mending the reputation of SGA.

“The students have chosen who they want to represent their University. That’s means a lot to Zach and I. We couldn’t be happier,” Zuccari said.

A total of 2,681 students – or nearly 10 percent – voted in the election, which was held at seven different spots across campus from Tuesday through Thursday.

Eighteen members of the United Party and one member of the Golden Ticket were selected as part of a mixed ticket. All election results must be approved by the judicial board, which will happen later today.

The changing of the seats will take place at the April 18 SGA meeting in the Mountainlair. The newly elected group will take over following an inauguration on April 21.
