The West Virginia University Symphonic Band and the WVU Concert Band will join forces to present a spring concert at the Creative Arts Center, Tuesday, April 17.

The program begins at 7:30 p.m. in the Lyell B. Concert Theatre and will be conducted by John Hendricks III, Dearl J. Drury, Christopher J. Nichter and Johnny Leonard III.

The Concert Band, an 85-member ensemble made up of University students, mostly non-music majors, will perform: “In All Its Glory,” by James Swearingen, a wonderful opener dedicated to the town of Worthington, Ohio; “The Empire Strikes Back (Finale),” by award-winning composer John Williams; a medley of selections by Lionel Bart from the British musical “Oliver”; a Symphonic Prelude based on the folk melody “Black is the Color of My True Love’s Hair” by Alfred Reed; “The Drunken Sailor,” a traditional shanty that that was sung to accompany work and other tasks aboard sailing ships; “Iberian Escapades – The Villas of Boca Raton,” by Robert Sheldon, inspired by the Florida resort architecture of Addison Mizner; and “Portrait of Freedom,” by Steven Reineke, composed to honor the men and women of our police and fire departments as well as our armed forces.

The Symphonic Band, a 45-member ensemble comprised mostly of music majors, will perform: “Georgian Court Fanfare,” by Richard Saucedo, a brilliant fanfare inspired by a famous landmark in New Jersey; “Be Thou My Vision,” by David Gillingham, an inspiring setting of the hymn tune “Slane”; “Pageant,” by Vincent Persichetti, which opens with a solemn chorale, followed by a vivacious “parade”; “Sea Treaders,” by Francis McBeth, a dramatically descriptive work that depicts both the calm and storm of the sea in two connected movements; and “Symphony of Fables,” by Julie Giroux, a symphonic treatment of two of Aesop’s fables, “The Lion and the Mouse” and “The Tortoise and the Hare.”
