This semester’s World Music Showcase Concert in the West Virginia University College of Creative Arts will feature the WVU African Music and Dance Ensemble and the WVU Steel Band.

The concert begins at 7:30 p.m., Thursday, April 12, in the Lyell B. Clay Theatre of the Creative Arts Center.

Guest artist Tijan Dorwana from Ghana will join the African Ensemble performance and the WVU Steel Band will play selections from this summer’s Smithsonian Folkways Festival performance in Washington, D.C., over the 4th of July weekend.

The concert is directed by Michael Vercelli, the director of the World Music Performance Center, who holds a doctorate of musical arts in ethnomusicology from the University of Arizona. He has studied countries’ traditional music and done fieldwork in primarily Ghana as well as Bali, Cuba and Brazil.

Dorwana, originally from the village of Saru in Ghana, performed at the Creative Arts Center in March with the African Music and Dance Ensemble, his first North American performance. He has been an educator for 20 years and has performed around the world.
