The West Virginia University Wind Symphony, under the direction of conductor John Hendricks III and assistant conductor Dearl J. Drury, will perform a spring concert at the Creative Arts Center, Tuesday, April 10.

The concert begins at 7:30 p.m. in the Lyell B. Clay Concert Theatre and will feature faculty oboist Cynthia Babin Anderson, as well as graduate student conductor Johnny Leonard III.

Anderson will solo with the Wind Symphony in “Concerto for Oboe,” a charming new concerto by American composer Eric Ewazen.

Another highlight of the concert will be “Symphony in B-Flat” by Paul Hindemith, considered by many to be one of the most prominent and widely known pieces composed or arranged for band—a true masterpiece of composition.

The program also includes:

Fanfare from “La Pri,” a jubilant brass fanfare written by French composer Paul Dukas for his 1912 ballet “La Pri” (The Flower of Immortality).

“Hanover Festival” by Philip Sparke, an exuberant concert-style overture that begins with a broad fanfare-like introduction and then transitions to a fast and lively virtuoso section.

“Entry March of the Boyars,” by Norwegian composer Johan Halvorsen. This majestic march was composed in 1882 in memory of the Romanian boyars (the privileged aristocracy).

“Elsa’s Procession to the Cathedral” by Richard Wagner. Lucien Cailliet’s musical adaptation of the famous and glorious scene from Act II of Richard Wagner’s “Lohengrin” has become one of the most popular transcriptions for wind band.
