An expert in the long term neurological issues related to playing sport will visit West Virginia University’s campus on Thursday, March 22 to discuss “The Science & Technology of Sport Concussion: Translating Data Collection into Concussion Prevention and Management.”

Dr. Kevin Guskiewicz will cover concussion in sport and how it relates to balance and neuropsychological function in high school and collegiate athletes. His talk, which is free and open to the public, is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. in Room 1909 of WVU’s Robert C. Byrd Health Sciences Center. The presentation is hosted by the College of Physical Activity and Sport Sciences Distinguished Lecture Series.

Guskiewicz is the Kenan Distinguished Professor and Director of the Matthew Gfeller Sport-Related Traumatic Brain Injury Research Center at the University of North Carolina. He also serves as the chair of Exercise and Sport Science and holds joint appointments in the Department of Orthopaedics, UNC Injury Prevention Research Center and doctoral program in Human Movement Science.

“WVU is fortunate to have Dr. Guskiewicz visit campus to share his research and expertise in neurological issues related to playing sport,” said Dr. Shelly Pruett, Athletic Training clinical coordinator at CPASS.

“His knowledge in concussion research is widely respected by colleagues in sport medicine, athletic training and physical education both at the collegiate and professional sports level. He’s been studying concussion prevention and management for more than 17 years.”

Guskiewicz has been the recipient of numerous funded research grants and has published many journal articles and textbook chapters related to concussion in sport.

In 2010 he was named to NCAA’s Concussion Committee, the NFLPA’s Mackey-White Committee, and the NFL’s Head, Neck, and Spine Committee. For more information, see: http://exss.unc.edu/faculty-and-staff/professors/kevin-m-guskiewicz/
