Pianist Lise Keiter, professor of music at Mary Baldwin College in Staunton, Va., will present a guest artist recital at the West Virginia University Creative Arts Center, Thursday, March 1, featuring works by Frederic Chopin, Amy Beach and Alexander Scriabin.
The concert begins at 8:15 p.m. in the Bloch Learning and Performance Hall (200A) and is free and open to the public.
Works on the program include: “Grande Valse Brillante, op. 34. No. 1” by Chopin (1810-1849), as well as Chopin’s “Mazurka in A Minor, op. 68, no. 2; and “Mazurka in B-flat Major, op. 7, no. 1.” She will also perform “Sonata No. 1 in F Minor, op. 6” by Scriabin (1871-1915); several works by Beach (1867-1944), including “In Autumn, op. 15, no. 1,” “Phantoms, op. 15, no. 2,” “Dreaming, op. 15, no. 3” and “Honeysuckle, op. 97, no. 5”; and Chopin’s “Scherzo No. 2 in B-flat Minor, Op. 31.”
Keiter has performed throughout the United States and in Europe, and she is active as a solo recitalist, collaborative artist and soloist with orchestra. Her latest European appearances include recitals with France’s International Roussel Festival, as well as with the Internationale Academie de Musique in Gargenville, France.
She currently serves as Music Department Chair at Mary Baldwin College and her work there has led her to develop an interest in the music of women composers. In 2005, she developed an all-women composers program of solo piano works, in honor of the bicentenary year of pianist and composer Fanny Mendelssohn Hensel (1805-1847). This highly popular recital has become her most-requested program.
Originally from Charleston, Ill., she holds a Bachelor of Music degree from the Oberlin Conservatory, where she received several top prizes. She completed a master’s degree and the Doctorate of Music at Indiana University, where she also received the Award for Outstanding Teaching.
