West Virginia University’s Sustainability Awareness Week will offer students and the whole WVU community ways to adopt simple yet effective best practices such as conserving energy and water, recycling, and reducing waste to make our campus sustainable.

Held from Feb. 27-March 2, the week brings awareness to students, faculty and staff regarding the University’s current sustainability efforts and plans for future sustainability measures.

Sustainability Awareness Week events will be held in the Mountainlair from 10 a.m.-5 p.m.:

– Monday, Feb. 27: Sustainability at WVU. The first day will help the WVU community become familiar with the University’s many initiatives that encourage sustainability through a quiz. Attendees may sign the WVU sustainability pledge, committing to conserving energy and recycling.

-Tuesday, Feb. 28: Recycling. Those who come by the sustainability office’s booth at the Mountainlair can take part in an educational beanbag trash toss game.

-Wednesday, Feb. 29: Water, Energy and Educational day. A blind taste test will be done, comparing various types of bottled water with tap water to demonstrate that tap water not only uses less plastic but also tastes just as great. Giveaways will be handed out.

-Thursday, March 1: Food and Dining Day. Attendees can learn about WVU’s trayless dining initiative, which has significantly reduced waste in the dining halls, as well as other ideas for conserving food. Students and faculty can learn about the upcoming Dining Hall Waste Audit and sign up for shifts.

-Friday, March 2: Transportation. Attendees can learn more about WVU’s alternative transportation in the PRT and Mountain Line Bus Service, as well as the Megabus, Zimride carpooling and Zipcar car sharing services.

Student governor Zach Redding will also be looking into raising funds for fraternity/sorority recycling.
