A West Virginia University student is organizing a March Madness 5 vs. 5 “Bring Clean Water to Ghana!” basketball tournament. The tournament will take place on Saturday, March 3 at 11 a.m. in the Student Recreation Center.

Chelsea Hodgkins, a junior international studies and geography major from Sudlersville, Md., has already raised $3,000 for Community Water Solutions, a non-profit organization. She is continuing to raise money for the cause through the basketball tournament. In April, Hodgkins will travel to Ghana this summer as part of a fellowship with Community Water Solutions.

The cost to sign up for each team is $10. All proceeds will go to Wells for Ghana, a non-profit organization based in Denton, Md. that drills wells that help deliver clean water to rural villages in Ghana and Tanzania. Since 2006, Wells for Ghana has drilled more than 600 wells that have brought clean water to more than 100,000 people.

The sign-up deadline is Friday, March 2. To register, email Hodgkins at chodgkin@mix.wvu.edu with a team name and name of all five team members. For more details, check out the event’s Facebook page at http://www.facebook.com/events/303509536375690/.

The winner of the tournament will receive a prize. There will also be a raffle at the tournament; prizes include dinner certificates to Boston Beanery, wing sauce from Buffalo Wild Wings and t-shirts.
