West Virginia University P.I. Reed School of Journalism students continue to garner national and international recognition for their work on “WVU News.”

The student-produced newscast recently received three international AVA Awards. The newscast’s “Big 12 Special Edition,” produced by Whitney Godwin of Flatwoods, W.Va., was named a Gold winner; ” September 11th Special Edition,” produced by journalism senior Eva Buchman of Martinsburg, W.Va., earned a Platinum award; and “WVU News Remembers Milan Puskar,” produced by Godwin, received a Platinum award.

Administered and judged by the Association of Marketing and Communication Professionals, the AVA Awards is an international competition that recognizes outstanding work by creative professionals from audio and video productions to websites and interactive social media sites.

The same two special edition newscasts were also recognized by the 33rd annual Telly Awards, both receiving Bronze Awards. The Telly Awards honors the best film and video productions, groundbreaking online video content and outstanding television commercials and programs. This year, the awards program received more than 13,000 entries television and cable stations, production companies and corporations around the world.

In addition, “WVU News” reporters and anchors received top honors from the Broadcast Education Association’s annual Festival of Media Arts competition. Erica Mokay, a journalism senior from Belle Vernon, Pa., earned first place as Best TV Anchor, as well as an honorable mention in Television Hard News Reporting. Paul King of Wellington, Ohio, earned an honorable mention in Television Feature Reporting, while “Big 12 Special Edition,” produced by Godwin, also received an honorable mention in Television Newscast.

Godwin’s special edition was also named a finalist for the College Television Emmys, a national competition recognizing excellence in college student-produced video, digital and film work, judged by members of the Television Academy. As with the Primetime Emmy� Awards, awards are based on excellence in overall production.

“WVU News” is produced by students in P.I. Reed School of Journalism. Students serve as reporters, on-air anchors, producers, directors and technical crew during newscast tapings at WVU’s professional television studios.
