WVU was born on Feb. 7, 1867 from the Morrill Land-Grant College Act of 1862. This act of Congress offered “land grants” of federally owned land to states that agreed to establish colleges to teach agriculture and the mechanical arts. On Oct. 3, 1863, the state legislature voted to accept a grant of land totaling 150,000 acres from the federal government. Funds from the sale of this land were used to establish WVU.
WVU is proud of its history as a land-grant university and remains dedicated to its land-grant mission of promoting access to higher education and applying research to meet the needs of West Virginians.
