Cutting-edge technology, including robots, multi-touch interface for video games and an underground communication system to help rescue trapped miners, can all be explored under one roof at the 2011 Fall Senior Design Expo, an exhibition of West Virginia University engineering students’ projects.

The expo is Dec. 5, from noon to 2 p.m. and will be held throughout the ground floor corridor of the Engineering Sciences Building on WVU’s Evansdale Campus. It features the work of seniors from the Lane Department of Computer Science and Electrical Engineering. The projects are a requirement for the students to receive their degree and the expo serves to applaud their hard work while educating the public.

“The showcase informs the public and publicizes the accomplishments of our students,” explained Dr. Ramana Reddy, a LCSEE professor. “The expo will expose students to the public where they will have to articulate the essence of their projects in simple and effective non-technical language.”

Projects at this semester’s expo cover a diverse range of interests. The design prototypes to be featured include:

• an underground communication system that can help rescue trapped miners
• an intelligent home security system
• next generation electric grid
• a stair-cleaning robot
• a multi-touch interface for video games
• a robot that can collect and classify recyclable waste

“In addition to the prototypes, the expo will also feature a demonstration of ideas that will go into the WVU Solar Decathlon House, which may compete in the 2013 contest in Washington, D.C.,” said Reddy.

Students from LCSEE will be available to answer questions about their design projects. The event is free and open to the public.
