West Virginia University officials, led by President Jim Clements, are front-and-center as leaders from America’s signature land-grant universities gather for their annual meeting.
The Association of Public and Land-Grant Universities is holding its 124th annual convention this week in San Francisco and Clements, WVU Provost Michele Wheatly and Chief of Staff Jay Cole are among the panelists featured at the meeting.
Clements moderated a panel entitled State-of-the-Art Energy Efficiency on Campus: Can it pay off financially in hard times. The panel is part of APLU’s Energy Forum; Clements is one of three presidents serving as a co-chair of the ongoing forum. Others on the panel include Virginia Hinshaw, chancellor, University of Hawaii-Manoa; John Meyer, vice chancellor for administration and resource management, University of California-Davis; Kathy Lindahl, assistant vice president for finance and operations, Michigan State University, and co-chair, Sustainable Advisory Panel; and Mary Ann Piette, deputy group leader, Commercial Buildings Systems Group, Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory.
Wheatly will sit on a panel entitled Community Colleges: Efficient Path to the Baccalaureate? Joining her will be Wendy Wilkins, executive vice president and provost, New Mexico State University; Raymond Alden, executive vice president and provost, Northern Illinois University; Warren Burggren, provost and vice president for academic affairs, University of North Texas; and Joy Griffin, American Council on Education Fellow, New Mexico State University.
Cole will discuss a new tool for institutions to measure a university’s impact and performance in economic development and regional innovation. Others on the panel are: Anne Kaplan, vice president for administration and university outreach, Northern Illinois University; Marvin Parnes, associate vice president-research, University of Michigan; Gene Merrell, assistant vice president of research and chief technology transfer officer, University of Idaho; and Kathay Rennels, assistant vice president for community and economic development, Colorado State University.
WVU and other land-grants are celebrating the 150th anniversary of the Morrill Act which created the land-grant system.
