West Virginia University students interested in being named Mr. or Ms. Mountaineer can send in their applications over the next couple of weeks.

The award honors one male and one female student who have a record of academic achievement and extracurricular involvement. The competition requires the undergraduate or graduate applicant graduate in May 2012.

Each year, the award coincides with Mountaineer Week. This year, Mountaineer Week will be held from Oct. 28 through Nov. 6.

“Mountaineer Week is such a great event for our campus, community and state,” said Sonja Wilson, senior programming administrator for the event. “I am honored to be a part of the planning of this celebration of our Appalachian heritage. One of the main components of Mountaineer Week is the Mr. and Ms. Mountaineer competition.”

Please fill out the online application at http://simpleforms.scripts.wvu.edu/mountainlair/MrandMsMountaineer2011/ by Sept. 22, 2011, at 4:30 p.m. If you are selected as a finalist, you must be available for interviews on Oct. 11 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. and the home WVU football game vs. Louisville on Nov. 5.

Please mail or drop-off your $20 registration fee to the Mountainlair Administrative Offices: Attn. Erin Blake, PO Box 6437, Morgantown, WV 26506. Make checks payable to WVU.

“Each year, we are impressed with the caliber of students that apply for this prestigious honor,” Wilson said. “All undergraduate and graduate students graduating in May 2012 are eligible for this award that honors one male and one female student who has a record of academic achievement and extracurricular involvement.”

The Mr. and Ms. Mountaineer competition was added to Mountaineer Week in 1962 and still remains an integral part of the program today, Wilson added.
