West Virginia University professors John Weigand, clarinet, and James “Doc” Miltenberger, piano, will present a recital at the Creative Arts Center, Sunday, Sept. 11, in memory of Richard “Dick” Powell, who was trombone professor at WVU from 1968 to 1995 before his death in 2001.

They will be joined by music faculty members William Skidmore, cello, Al Wrublesky, drums, and Andrew Kohn, bass. The program begins at 7:30 p.m. in the Bloch Learning and Performance Hall (Room 200A) and is free and open to the public.

The program will feature “Trio for Clarinet and Piano in A minor, Opus 114” by Johannes Brahms (1833-1897); “Chromatic Fantasy, BWV 807” by Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750), transcribed for clarinet by Stanley Hasty; “Premi�re Rhapsodie” by Claude Debussy (1862-1918) and “Derivations (for Benny Goodman)” by Morton Gould (1913-1996).

Weigand has trained with world-renowned artists such as Robert Marcellus, Fred Ormand and Lawrence McDonald. His extensive chamber music experience includes concerts at the Blossom Festival at Town Hall in New York City and at Yale University. He has recorded for the Musical Heritage Society and has presented numerous solo concerts and clinics around the country.

Miltenberger has given numerous solo recitals in cities such as Chicago, Pittsburgh, Washington, D.C., and at Carnegie Recital Hall in New York. He toured Japan in 1985 as featured soloist with WVU’s Percussion 80 and has toured Europe several times with the Miltenberger Jazz Quartet. He also has appeared on nationwide television on PBS and on the NBC “Today” Show. He is celebrating his 50th year on the WVU music faculty member during 2011-2012.
