Saxophonist Jan Berry Baker will present a recital with percussionist Stuart Gerber at the West Virginia University Creative Arts Center, Tuesday, Sept. 13. Both are on the music faculty at Georgia State University.

The event begins at 8:15 p.m. in the Bloch Learning and Performance Hall (200A) and is free and open to the public.

The program will feature “Alto Voltango” (2001) for alto saxophone and vibraphone by Luis Naon (b. 1961); “Penelope’s Song” (2004, arr. 2007) for soprano saxophone and electronics by Judith Shatin (b. 1949); “Transparency, Part I,” (2004) for percussion by Josh Levine (b. 1959); “The line we can’t cross” (2008) for alto saxophone and electronics by Kyong Mee Choi (b. 1971); “Komet” (1999) for percussionist, electronic and concrete music by Karlheinz Stockhausen (1928-2007); and “Parts for Floating Space” (2002) for soprano and baritone saxophones and percussion by Lei Liang (b. 1972).

Baker is a native of Alberta, Canada, and has performed throughout North America, France, Ukraine, Switzerland, Austria and the Czech Republic as a soloist and chamber musician. She has won top prizes in numerous competitions, including the Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition, the North American Saxophone Alliance Concerto Competition and the Johann Strauss Society competition.

Gerber has performed extensively throughout the United States, Europe, Australia, and Mexico as a soloist and chamber musician. He is an active performer of new works, has given the world premiere of Karlheinz Stockhausen’s “Heaven’s Door” and has recorded a number of percussion works for the Stockhausen Complete Edition. He has been the solo/faculty percussionist for the annual Stockhausen Courses in Germany since 2005.
