West Virginia University is offering a series of online courses this fall leading to a certificate in “Social Media for Business.”

The first class, “Introduction to Social Media,” will be offered Sept. 6-30. Participants learn about the foundation of social media, making goals and how to measure and apply them. The basics of Facebook are also covered in this class.

“Marketing Using Social Media,” will be offered Oct. 3-28. Participants learn how to use social media methods to get a message out about their company. They also learn how to use the tools such as Twitter, blogging, and LinkedIn.

“Integrating Social Media in Your Organization,” will be offered Nov. 7-Dec. 2. Participants are taught how to create their own social network, the basics of using video and mobile, assigning roles in their organization and time allocation. They learn to integrate widgets on their website and to pull all three courses together.

These courses are offered by WVU Online Continuing and Professional Education. Participants can take one course or all three leading to a certificate. Each course costs $195, or all three can be taken for $495.

The instructor is Jennifer Selke, a nationally known expert, speaker and consultant in the area of social media. She is a faculty member at the University of California, Berkeley Graduate School of Education and is affiliated with the Berkeley Center for New Media. Jennifer is a licensed educational psychologist in private practice. Her technology interests have taken her into the blogging and social media world where she runs a popular blog, thecampdirector.com . She speaks at national conferences, writes articles and conducts webinars for professionals on the subject of social networks.
