A Morgantown-based outdoor athletic series, hosted by the West Virginia University’s College of Physical Activity and Sport Sciences, returns in September.

The Morgantown Adventure Sports Series is a unique athletic competition that challenges cyclists, runners and triathletes while featuring scenic hillside courses, lake swimming and rugged mountain biking. To register, see: http://cpass.wvu.edu/mass/registration.

The second annual Coopers Rock Stump Jump! 10K Trail Run will be held at Coopers Rock State Forest Sept. 3 starting at 8:30 a.m. The moderately challenging course will take racers on a scenic journey through a hillside route.

Participants will receive a custom race t-shirt in blue and gold. The event features a post-race awards ceremony with food and beverages. The top male and female overall finishers will receive a $100 gift card for a new pair of running shoes at Morgantown Running.

Sanctioned by USA Triathlon, the XTERRA Big Bear Off-Road Triathlon and Duathlon will be held on Sept. 11 at the Big Bear Lake Family Camplands near Hazelton, W.Va., approximately 30 minutes east of Morgantown. Race start time is at 8:30 a.m. Race weekend registration will be held Saturday, Sept. 10 from 5 until 7:30 p.m. at the race site.

The XTERRA Big Bear race is part of the XTERRA America Tour, a national off-road triathlon tour, and will challenge participants of all levels.
The triathlon will consist of a 0.75-mile open water swim, 14.8-mile mountain bike, and 6.5-mile trail run. There will also be a duathlon option which replaces the swim with an opening two-mile trail run.

Zorrell technical t-shirts, unique handmade pottery awards, and great food await participants. Other prizes include an XTERRA wetsuit. There are categories for individuals and relay teams and participants in the triathlon will earn series points towards the 2012 XTERRA America Tour championship events.
