The WVU Alumni Association elected a new slate of board officers and members during its annual meeting in May.

Jack Rossi of Charleston, W.Va., will serve as chair; Holly Metz of Rockville, Md., was elected vice chair; Ray Byrd of Wheeling, W.Va., will serve as treasurer; and the Honorable Phil Gaujot of Morgantown, W.Va., was elected secretary.

“Our Board of Directors is an outstanding group of committed volunteers who bring a wealth of knowledge and experience that will assist us going forward,” said Stephen L. Douglas, president and chief executive officer of the Alumni Association. “I want to thank them, as well as our outgoing board members, for their service to the WVU Alumni Association and to the University.”

During the annual meeting, the Alumni Association also elected five new members to serve on its board, including Jim Bill Harvey, Ron Justice, Stephanie Lane, Christine McCartney, and Scott Rotruck.

Jim Bill Harvey

Harvey was born, grew up and attended high school in Oak Hill, W.Va. From 1973-79, he attended WVU and WVIT where he earned bachelor’s degrees in mining engineering and industrial management. He then worked in the West Virginia coal mining industry for eight years before returning to WVU to earn an MBA in 1988.

Harvey has worked for McDonough Caperton and their subsequent owners, including current employer Wells Fargo. He leads the Wells Fargo Insurance Services Energy and Mining Team, which provides property and casualty, employee benefits, surety and financial services to the energy and mining industry worldwide. His team has been named the most profitable operation in the Mid-Atlantic region five times since 1997, and has twice been recognized as the most profitable operation within Wells Fargo Insurance Services countrywide.

Harvey is a Life and Old Gold member of the WVU Alumni Association, as well as a member of the Marmaduke Dent Society. He is a Mountaineer Scholar level member of the Mountaineer Athletic Club, member of the Jerry West Society, the All-American Society and the Basketball Legacy Fund. He started the Wells Fargo Energy Group scholarship within the Mining Engineering Department of the College of Engineering which continues to grow and will surpass $300,000 in 2012.

He serves on the Board of Coal Education Development and Resources, which works with teachers in grades 1-12 to educate students in West Virginia, Virginia and Kentucky about coal, the mining industry and its importance to the region. Harvey also supports the FCA in both Morgantown (WVU) and South Central West Virginia.

Ron Justice

Justice serves as the on-campus representative for the Board of Directors. He is a two-time graduate of WVU, receiving a bachelor’s degree in history in 1985 and a master’s degree in educational administration in 1990.

As director of WVU Student Organization Services, Justice is responsible for leadership of the university’s more than 300 student organizations. He has helped to develop student programs, including the SHOP and Toy Mountain. Justice has worked for WVU in various roles since 1985. He has served as Greek advisor and assistant dean of students.

In addition to his leadership roles at WVU, Justice has been a public servant for more than 15 years. He was Morgantown mayor from 2002-09, helping to strengthen town and gown relationships with WVU. Previously, he served as deputy mayor for seven years and a member of city council from 1991-2009.

Justice serves on numerous boards and professional organizations, including the board of directors for PACE, Morgantown Theatre Company, WV Infrastructure Council, and Metropolitan Theatre Foundation. He previously served on the Metropolitan Planning Organization for Monongalia County/City of Morgantown, was a board of directors member for Greater Morgantown Community Trust, Governor’s Transition Committee on Tourism and State of West Virginia Workforce Investment.

Justice has received numerous honors and awards for his service. In 2005, he was recognized for his commitment to the community with the James R. McCartney Community Service Award from the WVU Alumni Association. He was honored with the Richard T. Feller Outstanding Alumni Award for Distinguished Service, West Virginia Municipal League Mayor of the Year, and Northeast Panhellenic Advisor of the Year. He is a member of the Class of 1999-2000 for Leadership Monongalia and Mountain Honorary.

Stephanie H. Lane

Lane received degrees in professional writing and communications in 2010 from WVU.

She is a board member of the American Cancer Society and established its Stephanie H. Lane Cancer Resource Network in Oakland, Calif., which coordinates cancer resources and consolidates information from numerous state agencies.

She formerly was the director of customer events and programs at Oracle Corporation. Lane serves on the UPMC Magee Research Institute’s Strategic Advisory Board and on the Board of Trustees for Sacred Hearts Schools in Atherton.

Christie M. McCartney

McCartney, a native of Huntington, W.Va., graduated from the WVU Honors Program in 1996 with a bachelor’s degree in interdepartmental studies and a minor in political science. She earned an MBA from Rice University in 2004 and, upon graduation, worked as a consultant for Futurestep, a division of Korn Ferry.

McCartney and her husband, Billy, a 1995 WVU graduate, have been active in the Lone Star Alumni Chapter in Houston since 2000. They helped restart the chapter and served as activities chairs, vice presidents of membership, and co-presidents. McCartney remains active in the chapter helping with college fairs and community service endeavors.

While at WVU, she was active in student government and also served as vice president of Kappa Kappa Gamma. She was a member of the Student Foundation Board of Managers, Mountain Honorary and was a finalist for Miss Mountaineer. After graduating from WVU, she spent a year as a traveling leadership consultant for Kappa Kappa Gamma.

McCartney is a member of the Eberly College of Arts and Sciences Advisory Committee. She is a life member of the Alumni Association and a member of the Old Gold Club. She is also active in the Houston Kappa Kappa Gamma Alumnae Association and the Houston Symphony League.

Scott Rotruck

Rotruck received a bachelor’s degree from WVU in 1977 and an MBA from Frostburg State University in 1986. He currently serves as vice president of corporate development and state government relations for Chesapeake Energy Corporation. He previously served as director of economic development for WVU and chairman and president of the Morgantown Area Chamber of Commerce.

Rotruck is a committed volunteer to his alma mater where he has served on the WVU Extension Service Visiting Committee, taught classes in entrepreneurship and served on the advisory committee of WVU’s Technology Transfer Office.

In addition to his service to WVU, Rotruck volunteers his time and expertise to a number of boards/organizations. He is a member of the University of Charleston’s Board of Trustees; the American Lung Association Board of Directors; and The Power of 32, a 32-county regional economic development initiative in Southwestern Pennsylvania, Pittsburgh, North Central West Virginia, Eastern Ohio and Western Maryland. He also chaired the West Virginia Tourism Commission and Vision Share Inc.

Rotruck has been recognized as a Distinguished West Virginian and received the 2006 WV Vision Award. The WVU Alumni Association also recognized him with the James R. McCartney Community Service Award, which is given to a Mountaineer who has provided outstanding citizenship and service to his or her community.

New members are elected each May at the Alumni Association’s annual business meeting. Individuals can be nominated by submitting a letter of consideration to the president of the Alumni Association.
