Two experts in the adapted physical education field will offer classroom learning strategies for physical activity educators at a West Virginia University program Aug. 8.

Dr. Timothy Davis, an associate professor of physical education at SUNY Cortland and Dr. Tom Moran, an assistant professor at James Madison University, are the keynote speakers for “How to teach skills everyone can learn: Applying the Universal Design for Learning in Recreation and Sport,” from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. in room 172 of the WVU Coliseum.

The event is sponsored by WVU’s College of Physical Activity and Sport Sciences and is funded by a grant from the Higher Education Access Project, a part of the Center for Excellence in Disabilities at WVU. It is designed to provide a service learning opportunity for faculty in physical education and sport science departments from colleges and universities and also high school teachers and coaches. The emphasis will be on strategies related to disability awareness and education in scholastic based sport and physical activity.

Sessions will focus on Universal Design for Learning and on applied innovations in classroom learning strategies. Additionally, participants will receive take home resources related to the workshop programming.

Registration is going on now through June and the fee is $35 including lunch, snacks, and resource bags. The workshop is open to the community.

Davis was awarded the 2010 Outstanding Professional Award recipient by the Adapted Physical Activity Council of the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance.

Moran teaches adapted physical education, motor development and motor learning and his research focuses on the impact of disability labeling on physical educators and community based programming for individuals with disabilities.

Graduate level participants have the opportunity to register for one credit hour if they wish. Registered participants will be sent details on applying for graduate professional credits.
