“Always available.” “Very helpful.” “Really cares.”

These are some of the phrases students have used to describe Ken Blemings, associate professor of biochemistry in West Virginia University’s Davis College of Agriculture, Natural Resources and Design, so it’s no surprise that he received the 2011 award for outstanding advising.

Nominations are submitted by students to the Davis College Student Council, which then conducts a vote of the student body to select the winner.

Biochemistry major and religious studies minor Ann Barry of South Charleston, W.Va., appreciates the fact that Blemings “always makes time and is very flexible when it comes to meeting with him for appointments.”

Bradley Williams, another biochemistry major from Marietta, Ohio, feels that Blemings “puts his students first, and himself second.”

In addition to helping ensure that Williams graduates on time after a sophomore-year change of major, “he also has helped me prepare for graduate school by helping me fit in classes that will increase my marketability for graduate programs.”

This is Blemings’s second advising honor of the year. In February, he was recognized as the Honors College Outstanding Advisor for 2011.
