West Virginia University’s fraternities and sororities can officially declare 2011 Greek Week a success.

Members of the 22 Greek organizations on campus collected 180 pints of blood for the American Red Cross, 428 toys for the WVU Children’s Hospital, more than 6,000 food items for WVU’s “The Rack” food bank and $1,700 to benefit The Ryan Diviney fund. Diviney is a former WVU student that was injured in an altercation in late 2009.

“The collaborative effort of the fraternities and sororities can have a positive impact on the community in many ways during Greek Week, and the success of the 2011 Greek Week is a direct relationship to the planning and teamwork of the organizations,” said Ron Justice, director of WVU’s Student Organizations Services.

Greek Week was held across campus April 11-15. Greek teams participated in a variety of events, including a banner competition, talent show, cheerleading and dance competition, Greek Games, blood drive, food drive and Penny Wars competition.

“The week was extremely successful. We are very proud,” said Ashley Staggers, program advisor for fraternities and sororities. “Not only does Greek Week allow students to showcase their talents and compete, it truly promotes the philanthropic spirit of the fraternity and sorority community.”

Each Greek Week team was evaluated for its performance during the week. The winners are: Sigma Kappa and Pi Kappa Alpha in first; Alpha Phi, Beta Theta Pi and Sigma Nu in second; and Pi Beta Phi, Phi Gamma Delta and Phi Sigma Kappa in third.

There were a total of eight teams.

In 2010, 4,000 food items were collected for The Rack and $2,000 was raised in support of the Bartlett House.
