Axes will be flying and chainsaws roaring as the West Virginia University Woodsmen Team welcomes the Mountaineer Lumberjackin’ Championship to Morgantown on Saturday (April 9)

Woodsmen and women will compete against teams from Penn State, Virginia Tech and a WVU Alumni Team from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, April 9, at St. Vincent’s Field in Morgantown.

“The Lumberjackin’ Championship is truly a unique event,” said Marie Perrin, a forest resources management major who is president of the WVU Forestry Club and member of the team. “Traditional forestry is a dying art and there are few places that people can view wood chopping and sawing.”

Fast-paced and exciting, the event will feature techniques such as crosscut, bow saw, underhand chop, axe throw and log roll.

The schedule:

  • 9 a.m. – Dendrology, Axe Throw, Log Roll
  • 10 a.m. – Underhand Chop
  • 11 a.m. – Crosscut (Men’s, Women’s, Jack and Jill)
  • Noon – Bow Saw
  • 12:30 p.m. – Break
  • 1 p.m. – Single Buck
  • 1:30 p.m. – Standing Block
  • 2 p.m. – Chainsaw
  • 2:30 p.m. – Relay Event

The Woodsmen team is comprised of roughly 15-20 members from a variety of disciplines across campus, and has traveled to numerous demonstrations and festivals last year. It also attended two competitions – the 29th Annual Lumberjackin’ Bluegrassin’ Jamboree at Twin Falls State Park in Mullens, W.Va., placing second, and the Virginia Tech Timberbeast Competition, placing third.

Admission to the event is free and open to the public. Parking is also available free of charge in the Percival Hall lot.
