One of the most revered and honored writers of her generation, Maya Angelou has been a focal point of socially critical literature since the publication of her first book, I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings. Writing on points of contention such as female identity, sexual violence and social inequality, Angelou incorporates her life experiences into relatable ruminations on these tough subjects, opening them up to her readers. She brings these stories to life throughout her travels, spreading her legendary wisdom and captivating audiences all over the world with vigor, perception and elegance, as only a true Renaissance woman can.
Dr. Angelou has published seven autobiographies, 17 books of poetry, six essays and a healthy collection of children’s books, plays and screenplays. She has also directed several films, appeared on television shows, and recorded several spoken word albums. Dr. Angelou has won and been nominated for countless awards, including a National Book Award nomination for I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings-, a Pulitzer Prize nomination for -Just Give Me a Cool Drink of Water ‘fore I Diiie, three Grammy Awards for spoken word albums and a Tony Award nomination for her appearance in Look Away. She has also received honorary degrees from nearly 40 prestigious universities. More important than her formal accolades is the promise that Dr. Angelou’s contribution to literature will continue to influence the literary audience of the future, breathing through the progress she has made in her fields.
