Everyone is exposed to chemicals on a daily basis.

Research at West Virginia University is revealing what happens when those chemicals combine in the body.

In March, a team of WVU chemistry researchers won an award at the Annual Society of Toxicology Meeting in Washington, D.C. The award was the Best Abstract Award for Presentation for the research on chemical mixtures.

There were more than 2,000 applicants, and Assistant Professor of Chemistry Jonathan Boyd, along with a group of students, won first place.

Boyd said it was a privilege to have his whole team recognized for winning this award.

“It wasn’t just the students or just a faculty member, it was a collaborative effort,” he said.

Catherine Kinzer, a graduate student in the biomedical sciences program, never expected the group to win at such a large conference.

“The stuff we are working on is really timely right now. Looking at mixtures has exploded recently,” she said.”It’s really nice to have people excited about the research that we are doing.”
