“Immediacy & Gesture,” an exhibition by ceramic artist Aaron Anslow, who is a Master of Fine Arts candidate in the West Virginia University Division of Art and Design, will be on view in the Paul Mesaros Gallery of the Creative Arts Center, during March 11-April 1.

Anslow will host an opening reception at the gallery, Friday (March 18) from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., where refreshments will be served.

“My work is inspired by the vessel and revolves around immediacy and gesture,” Anslow said. “It speaks about ceramic material and the process of construction.”

Anslow said he chooses to fire his work in atmospheric kilns, because of the unpredictable variety of surface that they provide.

“Communicating the action and energy of the forming process, as well as the way that forces such as gravity and temperature affect my work is my goal,” he said. “It is important to me to translate the softness and malleability of the clay and the fluidity of the glaze.”

Anslow holds an undergraduate degree in visual art from Bethany College and has exhibited his work in the Morgantown and Wheeling areas, as well as in Pittsburgh, at Slippery Rock University and at Strictly Functional Pottery National in Lancaster, Pa. He has also exhibited internationally at Jingdezhen Ceramic Institute in China.

He operates his own pottery business, called All Walks of Clay.

MFA thesis exhibitions are cutting-edge contemporary works that represent the highest level of achievement for WVU students as they receive their Master of Fine Arts degree from the Division of Art and Design.

Gallery hours are Monday through Saturday, from noon to 9:30 p.m. The galleries are closed Sundays and University holidays. Special individual or group viewing times may be arranged upon request.

All exhibitions and related events are free and open to the public.
