The traditional Scottish troupe The West Virginia Highlanders of Davis & Elkins College will be opening for Grammy Award-winning group The Chieftains on Tuesday, March 8 at 7:30 p.m. Limited tickets remain and are on sale now at the WVU Mountainlair and Creative Arts Center box offices, online at ticketmaster.com, or by phone at 304-293-SHOW or 800-745-3000.
In keeping with the traditional Northern European theme of the show, the West Virginia Highlanders will be warming up the audience with their spirited Scottish military tunes. Originally founded by the American Legion of Elkins, W.Va, the Highlanders have been celebrating the Scottish heritage of Appalachia for over 50 years. Armed with the dually jubilant and plaintive sounds of the historic bagpipe and the prevailing guidance of bass, snare and tenor drums, the West Virginia Highlanders’ commanding sound echoes of Scottish pride. The group has also appeared in Boston, Philadelphia, and Washington, D.C.
Official Musical Ambassadors of Ireland, The Chieftains have performed for the Pope and on top of the Great Wall of China, as well as being the first to perform in the Capitol Building in Washington, D.C. Their newest album San Patricio, a collaboration with blues/Tex-Mex rocker Ry Cooder, has continued to expand The Chieftains’ tradition of cultural outreach, coming together for a commanding, proud sound. The New York Times describes the new musical partnership as “thoroughly Mexican yet utterly Irish, carried aloft by tin whistles, skin drums, pipes, harps, guitars and stomping feet.”
Tickets are on sale now at the WVU Mountainlair and Creative Arts Center box offices. Ticket prices range from $37 to $42, depending on seat location. WVU Students can purchase tickets for $27 with a valid WVU Student I.D. Tickets can also be purchased online at www.ticketmaster.com or by phone at 304-293-SHOW and 800-745-3000.
